Abstract

Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist is a spiritual and philosophical novel that explores the journey of a young shepherd, Santiago, in his quest to discover his “Personal Legend.” While the novel is often read as an allegory for self-realization and personal growth, a deeper reading reveals a powerful eco-critical dimension. Santiago’s journey is not only guided by internal desires but also by the external world—signs from nature, the rhythms of the desert, and the forces of the wind and sun—all acting in harmony with divine will. This triadic relationship between humans, nature, and God is central to understanding the novel’s message. Using an eco-critical approach, this research article explores how The Alchemist portrays nature as a spiritual guide, reveals the interconnectedness of all creation, and emphasizes the necessity of harmony between humanity, the natural world, and the divine.
